Good to know
Zinc is sensitive. Certain substances in food can almost completely block its absorption:
- Phytic acid: Found in whole grain products, legumes, and nuts. It binds zinc in the intestines.
- Coffee & tea: The tannins they contain inhibit absorption. It is best to take zinc away from meals (approximately 1 hour before or 2 hours after).
- Many people do not tolerate it on an empty stomach (nausea) – in this case, a light meal without much whole grain/dairy products is advisable.
