Alum Stone
Alum has been known as a home remedy since the 15th century, when it was already used to stop the bleeding of small cuts. In medical and homeopathic treatments, alum, or potassium aluminium sulfate, has been applied since the late 19th century as a reliable remedy for minor ailments. The alum stone aftershave is now an established product in natural cosmetics and is applied to the skin after shaving.
Alum – A Product from Nature
Alum is a rare, and therefore precious, natural product. It is seldom found in pure form in nature. In mining, alum is extracted as alum stone or alunite. It is mainly found in Tuscany and Hungary. The potassium aluminium sulfur compound is a naturally occurring anhydrous salt. The colour of the salt ranges from yellowish-white to purple-red, from which octahedral, colourless crystals are formed.
Diverse Uses
- Alum is an ingredient in substances used to reduce the flammability of wood.
 - Alum is used in tanning leather and dyeing fabrics.
 - Alum is used in paper production.
 - Alum is used to clarify water.
 - Alum is an excellent fertiliser and is used to help develop the blue colour of hydrangeas.
 - Alum is used to grow crystals.
 - Alum is used for cosmetic body treatments as a deodorant and an aftershave, especially after shaving.
 - Alum crystals can be grown from the salt at home. Growing the crystal takes some time and patience.

The Alum Stone – The Adequate Shaving Aid
Most men have a daily morning routine that includes shaving. Factors such as personal preference or the time available in the morning are decisive for the choice between wet or dry shaving. Some need to be quick, while others love the clean feel of a close shave. Wet shaving doesn't have to be done with a straight razor. Modern wet shavers deliver the best results without the risk of injury from a razor blade's sharp edge. The razor glides gently over the skin. Avoid pulling or tugging at the razor. The risk of injury is reduced by using a sharp blade in the wet shaver. Wet shaving requires a little time for preparation. The face should be cleaned, any skin oils removed, and the beard hair pre-treated with shaving cream. The shaving cream covers and softens the beard hairs. The cream is best distributed with a shaving brush. After these steps, the razor blade of the wet shaver glides safely over the skin. Do not apply pressure to the skin. With certain hand movements, the skin can be stretched sufficiently in hard-to-reach areas. The wet shave is perfect. After shaving, soothe the skin with alum.
Warning – Risk of Acute Injury!
Inattention or time pressure is the most common reason for getting cut while shaving. This doesn't just happen to shaving beginners. The face is a well-vascularised area, and natural skin irregularities often make shaving difficult. Small and tiny cuts lead to bleeding wounds. The alum crystal is always close at hand and provides immediate relief after shaving. The little accident while shaving is quickly forgotten. Be prepared! A carefully performed morning shave supports a good start to the day. Post-shave care with the alum crystal protects and nourishes the skin.
Alum Stone Aftershave – The Natural Alternative
Every shave irritates the skin. The alum stone aftershave is the natural alternative to conventional aftershaves.
After Wet Shaving
The alum stone aftershave is applied gently to the skin while it is still soft and damp after shaving. The skin's pores, wetted with the alum, contract. Applying the alum crystal after shaving has an antibacterial and disinfectant effect. Any spots, blackheads, or inflammatory skin irritations that often form after shaving are visibly reduced by the alum stone aftershave.
Before Dry Shaving
The alum stone aftershave is used as a preshave for electric dry shaving. The aftershave is moistened with cold water and applied carefully to dry skin before shaving. This helps protect the skin from irritation during the shave itself.
Use on Skin Irritations and Minor Cuts
When used on dry skin, the alum stone aftershave is moistened with cold water and applied carefully with gentle pressure. Micro-injuries to the skin are effectively treated with the alum stone aftershave. The result is immediately visible. The aftershave can be applied several times in a row after shaving.
Disinfectant and Skin-Soothing Effect
The alum stone aftershave prevents the penetration of bacteria and germs after shaving. Alum stone aftershave soothes skin cells.
A Useful Utensil in the Bathroom
The alum stone aftershave belongs in every bathroom and is quickly at hand whenever needed. It is a particularly useful utensil after a daily shave. After shaving, the dissolved minerals naturally soothe sensitive facial skin, completely without chemical additives.
Alum Stone Aftershave – Proper Use
After shaving, wash your face with plenty of cold water. The skin's pores will close. Use a clean towel to thoroughly dry the shaved areas. Now apply the alum stone aftershave, moistened with cold water. Apply only gentle pressure. Too much pressure could irritate the skin. Leave the moist film applied to the skin. It will dry in a few minutes in the air. Afterwards, wash the shaved areas with cold water, dry them, and, if desired, apply a facial moisturiser.
The Natural Effect is Convincing
The use of the crystal is not only convincing after shaving, but also in cosmetic applications. As a deodorant, its importance lies in inhibiting odours. When moistened with cold water and applied to the skin, the crystal causes the pores to contract. Sweat production is reduced. The formation of bacteria, which is responsible for the unpleasant odour of armpit or foot sweat, is reduced. The minerals contained in the alum reduce and inhibit the formation of bacteria on the skin. This can help prevent infections. The mineral substances it contains support antibacterial skin care after shaving, especially for the treatment of spots and blackheads. The shaving foam used usually has an alkaline pH. Applying the alum crystal rebalances the skin's slightly acidic pH value after shaving. The natural crystal stone contains no preservatives and is free of colourants and fragrances. The aftershave is suitable for practically every skin type. It is odourless. It has disinfectant and skin-soothing properties. For sensitive skin that easily becomes red and tight, the alum stone aftershave is the product of choice after shaving.
Disadvantages
None are known to date.
Caring for the Alum Stone
After use, the alum stone aftershave should be rinsed thoroughly with cold water and dried with a clean towel. Warm water damages the stone. It washes out large holes, making the stone permanently unusable as a deodorant or aftershave. Passing it on to family members is not recommended for hygienic reasons.
What to Look for When Buying
Alum stones or sticks are available in pharmacies and online. Particularly inexpensive alum products may have a partially artificial composition.
Is the Alum Stone Dangerous?
Children and pets should not come into contact with alum. With responsible handling, the positive properties of the salt can be put to good use.
