FAQ

Is your scar: Red? Raised? Hardened? Itchy? Painful?

Kelo-cote® scar management products can help.

What is Kelo-cote®?

Kelo-cote® is a lightweight, self-drying silicone gel for the treatment of scars. Kelo-cote® has been shown to flatten, soften and smooth scars, relieve the itching and discomfort of scars, as well as reduce the discoloration associated with scars. (Ref: 1,2,3)

What is Kelo-cote® made of?

Kelo-cote® features the patented Siliclear Complex ™, a precise blend of bio-inert and bio-compatible silicone compounds, namely polysiloxane, silicone dioxide and non-volatile silicone components. It is therefore suitable for the use on children or people with sensitive skin (Ref: 4,1). To learn more about the SiliClear Complex ™ click here.

How does Kelo-cote® work?

Kelo-cote® rapidly dries to form a custom fitted silicone sheet; this silicone gel sheet layer is gas permeable, flexible and waterproof. Kelo-cote® forms a bond with the stratum corneum (the outer layer of dead skin cells) forming a protective barrier against chemical, physical and microbial invasion of the scar site while assisting with hydration. This creates an environment that allows the scar to mature through normalized collagen synthesis cycles, and improves the physiological and cosmetic appearance of the scar.

How long will it take for a scar to improve?

When using Kelo-cote®, the recommended minimum treatment time is 60-90 days. Larger and older scars may take longer and continued use is recommended if improvement is still seen after the initial 90 days.

How should Kelo-cote® be applied?

  • Ensure that the affected area is clean and dry.
  • Apply Kelo-cote ® to the area as a very thin layer and allow to dry.
  • Apply Kelo-cote ® twice daily.
  • For maximum effect, Kelo-cote ® Gel should have 24 hour contact with the skin.
  • Once dry, Kelo-cot ®e can be covered with pressure garments, sun block or cosmetics.
  • If Kelo-cote ® has not dried within 4-5 minutes, you have probably used too much. Gently remove the excess and allow the drying process to continue.

On what types of scars is Kelo-cote® effective?

Kelo-cote® is intended for the management of old and new hypertrophic and keloid scars resulting from general surgical procedures, trauma, wounds and burns. Kelo-cote® has demonstrated efficacy on raised and/or reddish colored scars regardless of their age. It may help to soften and flatten raised scars and reduce redness or discoloration associated with them (Ref: 4,1,2). It may also reduce itching or irritation you may still be experiencing.

Does Kelo-cote® work on keloid and hypertrophic scars?

In several medical studies Kelo-cote® has been proven to flatten, soften, smooth and dramatically improve the discoloration noted with these types of aggressive scars (Ref: 3,4,1).

Does Kelo-cote® work on pitted acne scars?

No. Topical scar treatments are not effective on pitted acne scars. If you have pitted acne scars, please see a dermatologist. She/he can discuss with you some of the latest treatments for managing these types of scars, including laser therapy, dermabrasion and fillers.

What are the advantages of using Kelo-cote® gel instead of silicone sheets?

Kelo-cote® has all the benefits of silicone sheets without the inconvenience. Tape allergies, difficulty of use, and the potential for bacteria growth between the sheet and the skin are all problems inherent with sheeting.

Is Kelo-cote® suitable to use on children?

Yes, Kelo-cote® is completely bio-compatible and is therefore suitable for the use on children or people with sensitive skin (Ref: 1-3).

Does Kelo-cote® gel have any odor associated with it?

No, Kelo-cote® gel is 100% odor free.

Are there any restrictions on the use of Kelo-cote®?

Kelo-cote® is for external use only. Direct contact with eyes, mucous membranes, third degree burns and open wounds should be avoided. Kelo-cote® should not be used on dermatological conditions that disrupt the integrity of the skin.

How do I clean the affected area before re-applying Kelo-cote?

The Kelo-cote® layer will dissipate as your skin cells naturally exfoliate, approximately in 24 hours. If necessary, gently washing with soap and water should remove any remainder. It is not necessary to remove the entire Kelo-cote® layer prior to re-application.

Will Kelo-cote® help heal older scars, or just new scars?

Kelo-cote® may help improve the appearance of older scars as well as newer scars.

How long should I use Kelo-cote® for scar treatment?

90 days is the recommended initial treatment period. Depending upon the scar's condition and age, treatment could be a bit shorter or longer. Depending on the size of the scar, each package is designed to offer a sufficient quantity of gel for 90 days of treatment, applied twice a day.

How long will it take to see results?

The timing of results varies greatly from person to person. You should see improvement within 90 days. Reduction of redness and itching are usually the first results noted. Should I continue to apply Kelo-cote® after 90 days?

If you are still progressing at 90 days, continue to apply Kelo-cote® until you are no longer seeing improvement.

When can I start to apply Kelo-cote® after surgery?

You can start to apply Kelo-cote® after the stitches have been removed and the wound is closed.

Is Kelo-cote® effective on all skin types?

Kelo-cote® is effective on all skin types and colors.

Will Kelo-cote® harm my hair?

Kelo-cote® will not harm your hair. There is no effect from Kelo-cote® on hair.

What is the difference between silicone gel sheets and Kelo-cote®?

It is suggested by several studies that silicone gel sheets have been proven to work due to their semi-occlusive nature. Kelo-cote® works in the same way as other silicone gel sheets, however its unique formulation ensures that on application, an ultra thin layer of silicone binds to the top layer of the skin (stratum corneum) forming a durable sheet.

This ultra thin waterproof sheet increases the hydration of the stratum corneum but also allows the skin underneath to breathe. The thinner the layer, the more durable the material will be and the better the breathability. If Kelo-cote® is applied too thick then this reaction will take too long and the gel will remain sticky.

Because Kelo-cote® binds to the stratum corneum, the contact time of the silicon gel is maximized. Coupled with the ease of application, this ensures much greater patient compliance to the therapy. Kelo-cote®, unlike other silicone gel sheets, does not cause maceration*, pruritus** or promone localized infections.
